In short, the Dada art movement was anti-art. The name, in French meaning 'hobby horse', pointless as it is, was a symbol for the artists disillusionment and commentary on traditional European and American art and artists. The Dadaists by using absurd and "non-art" elements in their art actively rejected the aesthetics of all art that preceded them.

Dada did not maintain any sort of specific artistic style of aesthetic. The Dada movement was consumed by anti-rational approaches, most notably the creative technique that is based on chance and accident. Art that was created on accident was very Dada. Also art that held no meaning or had no purpose was enthusiastically received by the group. For example Marcel Duchamp's work titled "Fountain" was actually a simple urinal, signed "R. Mutt". Pretty Dada.

that the Dada movement was named in a way that held up the movements ideals of a non-rational approach to art. It is said that the name Dada (French for 'hobby horse') was selected by the movements founders by inserting a letter opener into a random page of the dictionary.
